Simple Ways to Improve Your Health

Posted by | Posted in General Health | Posted on 28-12-2009

Improving your health is not as difficult as you might think.  There are small changes that you can make every day that will improve your health over time.  It might be even easier than you previously thought, and you might be surprised at how great you feel when you make these changes.

Exercise three to five times a week.  Even if you exercise for just 30 minutes you are improving your health because you are making your heart work harder, which in turn makes it stronger.  You are also building lean muscle mass which will help you burn more calories at all times.

Eat the appropriate amount of calories per day.  You can use online calculators or you can even meet with your doctor and determine how many calories you should be eating per day.  When you do this you might find that you have been eating more calories than you need.

Get your calories from foods that are nutritionally balanced.  Instead of eating fast food eat foods that are prepared in the home and are not as fatty.  When you are eating foods that are lower in fat you can generally eat more while getting less calories which will leave you satisfied longer and less likely to binge eat.

What You Can do to Protect Your Sexual Health

When we are young our sexual health is something that we take for granted.  We just assume that we’ll always be healthy sexually but this is not necessarily true if we don’t do some very important things.  It’s better to protect your sexual health than to try to improve it after it has begun to fail.  There are some simple things that both men and women can do to prevent issues with sexual health.

First and foremost, women need to have an gynecological exam yearly.  When women see the gynecologist they ensure that everything is healthy.  If something is wrong, it can be caught early so that it can be treated and she can continue on with her life as she did before.  If a woman does not see the gynecologist annually there may be problems that exist silently.

Men should have a physical exam yearly, as well.  This will involve a screening for testicular cancer as well as prostate cancer.  These diseases are considered silent killers.  They can not only kill your libido, they can be fatal if they are not detected early and treated.  Like women, men need to see the doctor annually to prevent their sexual health from failing.

Factors that May be Affecting Your Sexual Health

As we age, our sex lives change a bit.  Many people are quick to blame changes in their sex life on their age, but there are some things that may be affecting your sexual health that you hadn’t even thought about.  If you make some changes you might find that your sex life is not as affected by age as you might have thought.

Alcohol is a suppressant, which means that when you drink your body is not as responsive as when you are not.  This can affect the sexual health of a lot of people as they may not be able to perform when they want to.  Simply avoiding alcoholic beverages will usually restore the ability.  If you drink excessively, it may not just be affecting your sexual health but your overall health.

High blood pressure tends to affect the sexual health of men.  If you have high blood pressure nothing in your body works the way it should, even if you don’t realize it.  If you suspect that you have high blood pressure you should see your doctor.  They can often prescribe medication that will help your blood pressure come down and restore your sexual function.

Diabetes is the cause of many changes in sexual health as well.  Just because you have diabetes doesn’t mean that you are going to have issues, it just means that you have to be sure to keep your blood glucose in control so it doesn’t.

Making Weight Loss Happen

Many people feel like weight loss is just not possible. They feel as though they have tried everything and it has failed, so they must be meant to be overweight, right?  Wrong!  Many people just go about weight loss in the wrong way.  They set their expectations too high and they don’t have enough information to make weight loss happen.

The first thing you need to figure out how many calories you need to eat per day.  You can do this through the use of many online calculators or you can meet with your doctor and have them help you figure out how many calories you should be getting each day.  Many people are shocked when they find out that they have been eating two to three times the amount of calories that they need.  Simply adhering to the calorie guide will help you achieve weight loss.

When you add in 30 minutes of exercise three to five times a week suddenly the weight loss will happen.  Of course, you have to maintain your caloric intake while you are working out, and when you do this you are doubling your efforts.  Within one month you should see a decent weight loss and this will motivate you to keep going.  For this reason, you need to give yourself a month to see changes before you decide this simple way to achieve weight loss will work for you.

Making Fitness a Part of Your Life

Many people don’t believe that they can get in shape because they just aren’t fitness oriented.  This is just an excuse, as everyone can make fitness a part of their life if they really want to.  If you want to make fitness a part of your life you can, you just have to be dedicated to it.

A great way to keep fitness in your life is to find a fitness buddy.  This is someone that you can workout with and will hold you accountable when you aren’t doing what you need to do for your overall fitness.  Sometimes just knowing that you will be letting someone else down will keep you going.

Join a gym.  Many people find that if they are paying for a gym membership they are more likely to continue to make fitness a part of your life.  You might also find that there are classes or machines that you really enjoy using to get in shape, which will bring you back again and again.

Create fitness goals.  When you create goals for yourself it is easier to push yourself to keep going.  Make the goals realistic so you are sure to reach them and keep pushing forward.  When you don’t have any goals it may be much more difficult to keep going with your new lifestyle.

Habits that are Negatively Affecting Your Health

No one wants to think that they are doing things every day to negatively affect their health, but chances are that you are doing things that are not good for you and are not allowing for you to feel your very best.  Most of these things can be turned around by simply changing your behavior, which means that you can start living a better life right now.

One thing that you may be doing to negatively impact your health is smoking.  Smoking is not good for your lungs, your mouth, your throat, or even your skin.  While many people think that lung cancer and associated health issues could never happen to them, the fact remains that more people are diagnosed with lung and throat cancer every day.

Neglecting your teeth and gums.  Many people simply gloss over this particular hygiene need every day.  Not only is it not good for your teeth not to be brushed twice a day, it is not good for your gums and can lead to gum disease and even heart disease, which has been linked to gum disease.  It’s important to make oral care a priority.

Eating fast food.  Many people think that cooking just takes up too much time and money so they eat out.  When you eat fast food you are getting more fat and calories than you need.  Eaten once every great while this is not an issue, but when you are eating this regularly you could be affecting your heart and even becoming obese as a result.  It’s easier to fix foods than you might think, buy a couple of quick meal cookbooks and enjoy home cooking and better health.

A great thing to do if you’re having trouble sleeping or find yourself having some troublesome allergies is getting hypoallergenic mattress covers.

Making Your Health a Priority

With the New Year right around the corner now is the perfect time to start making your health a priority.  You should not wait another minute, day, week, month, or year to start taking your health seriously.  As soon as your health becomes a priority you are actually extending your life expectancy and making what is left of your life as positive as possible.

Making your health a priority can start with simple things.  You can start by making health food choices.  Healthy food choices are those that include fresh foods that you are able to prepare in your home.  This is always a better option than buying fast food that has a lot of fat and calories in it.

You can also begin to exercise.  Exercising just two to three times a week for 30 minutes each session can change your body and your overall health.  Everyone has an hour to an hour and a half every week where they could squeeze in some exercise.  Not only will you feel better, you’ll look better!  Exercise can take many different shapes such as walking, lifting weights, doing aerobics, etc.  Choose something that you like and stick with it.  If you give it one month you’ll be so excited by the changes in your body and mind that you won’t want to stop.
